COVENTRY, May 28 – The Coventry High boys golf team didn’t lose a dual meet this spring going 18-0 overall and a perfect 12-0 to win the NCCC championship. That included a four-shot win over Avon in early May.
But Avon was able to earn some championship hardware with a 10-stroke victory at the NCCC Tournament at Twin Hills Country Club on Wednesday. Led by Marcus Husted, one of four medalists with a 74, Avon beat Coventry, 303 to 313. Ellington was a close third with 315 strokes.
Avon (13-2, 11-1 NCCC) received some fine play from Alex Stekler with a 75, Ryan Karbowicz with a 76 and Matt Bergman with a 78.
Canton’s Logan Anderson shot a 77 to earn a spot in the top 10 at the NCCC meet. The Warriors finished 9-10 on the year and 6-6 in the NCCC.
Avon and Canton both qualified for their respective CIAC championship tournaments. Avon is the No. 2 seed in the Division II tournament that is Monday at Tallwood Country Club in Hebron. Canton is seeded 11th in the field of 20 teams at the Division IV tournament that will be held at Crestbrook Park in Watertown.

Avon wins SCGGL title
SOUTHINGTON – Avon High senior Marissa Grillo won the 2013 Southern Connecticut Girls Golf League championship by eight strokes Thursday at Hawk’s Landing with a 78. Grillo’s outstanding performance helped Avon win the SCGGL Tournament and clinch the league championship as well.
Avon won the tournament by 18 strokes over second place Mercy of Middletown, 368 to 396. Sacred Heart Academy was third with 414 strokes.
Avon was able to make up two meets with Hand and Suffield that had been postponed during the regular season and the Falcons finished its league schedule with an 11-0-1 record in the league, ahead of Cheshire, who finished with a SCGGL record of 10-1-1.
Grillo was medalist for the 12th time in 14 events this spring. Teammate Christine Bae finished in the top five with a 95.
Avon (18-4-1, 11-0-1 SCGGL) was one of 15 teams to qualify for the CIAC tournament and is seeded 10th. The CIAC girls tournament is Tuesday, June 4 at Orange Hill Country Club in Orange.
