Golf: Grillo leads Falcons; Avon players ousted at Open tennis

ORANGE, June 4 – Avon’s Marissa Grillo shot a 12-over-par 86 to lead the Avon High girls golf team at the CIAC championship tournament Tuesday at the Orange Hills Country Club. 

Avon (18-4-1, 11-0-1 SCGGL) finished tied for 10th in the field of 15 teams. Berlin easily won its second straight state championship with a 12-shot victory over Staples and Greenwich. Avon’s combined score of 401 was the second lowest for the Falcons in state tournament play. 

Grillo led with an 86. Alana Pulling and Melissa Horovitz each shot a 103 while Christine Bae shot a 109 and Amanda Lewis shot a 119.

Avon teams compete at State Open
NEW HAVEN, June 4 – The Falcons played tough matches but were eliminated at the State Open boys tennis tournament. Sam Aronson dropped a hard fought bout to Morgan White of Old Lyme, 7-5, 3-6, 12-10 in the first round. Avon’s Sam Flaxman also dropped a 6-3, 6-4 decision to Greenwich’s Blake Niehaus in the first round. 

In doubles, Ridgefield’s Thomast Knortz and Bryson Mosley beat Avon’s Eric and Evan Selzer by a score of 6-3, 6-4 in the first round.
