Avon’s Joseph Ives got the job on the basketball court for Eastern Connecticut State University and in the classroom.

Ives, who graduated from ECSU in May with a degree in sociology, was recently named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Honors Court for the second straight year.

Ives is one of 700 basketball players from Division I, II, III and NAIA schools to be recognized for excellence in the classroom. Players must have complied at least a 3.20 grade point average.

“Joe was a terrific role model on and off the court,” said Bill Geitner, Eastern’s 11th year head coach. “His hard work, dedication to excellence, and willingness to give to others make him a truly special young man.”

Ives, who was a tri-captain for the Warriors this year, graduated cum laude. He was a three-time member of the Little East All-Academic team. He graduated with a 3.52 GPA and a 3.76 GPA in his major.

On the court, Ives helped Eastern (22-8) capture its first ECAC Division III New England title and win 20 games for the fourth straight year. Ives started the first 18 games of the year at point guard before sitting out a game against Rhode Island College with a shoulder injury. Four days later, he suffered a career-ending knee injury against Wesleyan.

Ives averaged 9.1 points and 2.9 assists in 19 games this season for the Warriors. He averaged 32.4 minutes a game and was a three-year starter for ECSU. In his tenure, Eastern went 87-34 overall and 42-14 in Little East play. In his career, Eastern won one Little East title and finished second twice. In Ives’ junior season, Eastern went to the NCAA Division III tournament and advanced to the Sweet 16.
