CANTON – The plan is to begin playing games on Canton High’s new multi-purpose athletic field on Friday night.

Dee Stephan, the school’s athletic director, said the plan is for the Canton field hockey team to host Westbrook on Friday night at 6 p.m. on the new field. The traditional doubleheader of night soccer games will also be held on Saturday night at the new facility with the girls soccer team facing Ellington at 6 p.m. and the boys soccer team hosting Ellington at 8 p.m.

Portable generators will be placed around the track to provide the lighting.

The field has been painted and Stephan said that the football team hopes to play on the field when they host Lewis Mills on Saturday, November 16.

Canton’s football team is also scheduled to host Hyde-New Haven (2-1) at 3 p.m. on Saturday. That game will likely be played on West Field, where the football team has been hosting their home games since 2007.

The game between Canton (2-0) and Hyde will be taped by Connecticut Public Television’s (CPTV) sports network for broadcast three times on Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 9 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 13, at 10 a.m. and Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 9 p.m.

Last November, voters approved the $3.6 million project to rebuild the parking lot, build a track and field facility and artificial turf field.

If the field isn’t ready to be used, the soccer games will be played at Bowdoin Field.
