SIMSBURY, Oct. 18 – The opportunities were there but the Simsbury High football team couldn’t cash in. The Trojan defense forced four New Britain turnovers on the Hurricanes’ first possessions of the second half. Simsbury scored a touchdown after one turnover but that was it in a 14-7 loss in overtime to the Hurricanes.
Midway through the third quarter, New Britain QB C.J. Gaskin fumbled a snap at his own four-yard line. Two plays later, Brad Helmkamp scored from the 1-yard line to tie the game at 7-7 with 6:29 left in regulation.
On New Britain’s next drive, Gaskin was sacked at his own 20-yard line, fumbled and the Trojans recovered. But Simsbury QB James Hermsen lost the ball on the very next play on a fumble, bailing out the Hurricanes. Simsbury turned the ball over twice in the second half on fumbles while New Britain lost three fumbles and threw an interception.
In overtime, New Britain (3-2, 2-1 CCC Div. I West) got the ball first and scored on a 6-yard run from Kyshawn Gunn and the extra point kick from Elvin Silva. Each team starts with the ball on the 10-yard line and gets four plays to score.
The Hurricane swamped Simsbury in OT. On its second play, New Britain’s Alex Swaby sacked Hermsen for an 11-yard loss, pushing the Trojans back to the 18-yard line. After an incomplete pass on third down, Hermsen’s fourth down pass into the end zone was intercepted by Diante Lewis to end the game.
Simsbury slips to 1-5 on the season and 0-4 in CCC Div. I West. Helmkamp led Simsbury with 100 yards on 16 carries. New Britain QB C.J. Gaskin completed 9-of-21 passes for 156 yards and a touchdown.
