AVON – As part of Spirit Week events at Avon High, four varsity games will be played under the lights at the high school. Football, boys soccer, girls soccer and field hockey games will be played under portable lights this week on the football field. The volleyball team will play in the main gym as they normally do.
Fundraising events at the boys soccer and girls soccer games will be donated toward research to stop cancer in honor of the late Colleen Martin, a physical education teacher and coach at Avon Middle School for 26 years, who died last week after a brief illness.
“Colleen taught seventh and eighth grade P.E. (physical education) so she touched virtually all of our student athletes in some way,” said Newell Porch, Avon’s athletic director. “The kids are pretty shook up about her passing. They came up with the fundraising idea as a way to honor her.”

Since losing to Somers on Oct. 3 by one goal, the Avon boys soccer team has won five straight by a margin of 28-1. The Falcons (11-2) will be facing a challenging Ellington team (9-3-1). Avon beat Ellington in September, 1-0. It’s the start of a challenging three-game run to close out the regular season against Ellington, Suffield (13-0) and Granby (6-4-3).
In volleyball, Avon (11-6) is having a strong season and will be favored against an improved Canton team (3-14). The match begins at 5:30 p.m. in the main gym.
On Thursday night, Avon’s field hockey team plays a crucial game in its quest for a third straight NCCC championship. The Falcons began the week in third place in the league behind Granby (9-4, 8-2 NCCC) and Suffield (11-2-0-1, 7-2-0-1 NCCC). Granby leads the league with 16 points with two games remaining. Teams earn two points for a win and one or a tie or overtime loss.
Avon (8-2-2, 7-2 NCCC) has three league games remaining on Tuesday at Stafford, on Thursday night under the lights against Suffield and on Monday against Enfield at home. If Granby wins their remaining two NCCC games, Avon will have to win its three NCCC games to tie the Bears for the championship.
On Friday night, the Avon High girls soccer team (12-1, 12-1 NCCC) gets another crack at Suffield (13-0, 13-0). Avon’s only loss this season was at the hands of Suffield in a 5-0 loss in September. Since then, Avon has won 11 straight.
Spirit Week concludes on Saturday with the Homecoming football game as Avon (4-2) hosts Granby (2-3) at 6:30 p.m.
