WINDSOR LOCKS – The NCCC cross country championship will be decided on Wednesday at Windsor Locks High beginning at 2 p.m. It looks to be a competitive race for the boys and girls championships.
On the girls side, defending Class MM champion Avon (13-0) is being challenged by Suffield (12-1). The Falcons outlasted Suffield, 27-29 last week to win its 41st straight NCCC dual meet and finish undefeated in the league for the third straight year.
But two days later, Suffield beat Avon at the Wickham Invitational in Manchester by 20 points, 76-96 in the seeded race. In the NCCC, each team earns one point for every team they beat in the dual meet portion of the schedule. They also earn one point for every team they beat at the league championship meet.
If the two teams finish tied at the NCCC meet, the tiebreaker goes to the team that finishes ahead at the league championship meet. Simply, Avon needs to win the league meet to win its third straight NCCC championship. If Suffield wins the league meet, they’ll bring home its first NCCC championship since 2009.
On the boys side, Ellington (13-0) went undefeated in the NCCC while Suffield was second at 12-1. Canton took third with an 11-2 record. Ellington is the favorite, having a 26-32 win over Suffield in September. Ellington is the defending league champion while Suffield is looking for its first title since 2011.
