Avon’s defense carries Falcons past Canton girls

CP basketball graphicAVON, January 17 – Avon’s tough defense was too much for Canton as the Falcons caused numerous Warrior turnovers in a 65-38 victory Friday night in Avon.

The game was tied at 20-20 in the second quarter before Avon moved ahead with a 28-20 lead at halftime. The Falcons seized control of the game in the third quarter, outscoring the Warriors by 15 points. 

Avon’s leading scorer, sophomore Abby Laszewski, led the way with 19 points and 16 rebounds. Point guard Anna Schrecengost added 11 points and 10 assists or the winners. Alex Benedict scored nine for the Falcons, now 7-2 overall and 6-0 in the NCCC. Avon has won five in a row. 

Canton (5-4, 3-3 NCCC) was led by Gabby Rose with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Emily Briggs had 10 points and five steals while Jacquie Grabowski had four points and five steals. Maggie Treacy scored nine for the Warriors, who have lost two straight.
