Canton basketball teams snap losing streaks; Avon girls continue to roll

CP basketball graphicSTAFFORD, Jan. 24 – The Canton High boys and girls basketball teams got back on the winning track Friday night while the Avon High girls basketball continued to win games.

The Canton boys snapped a four-game losing streak with a 54-38 decision over Stafford, sparked by a solid defensive effort. The Canton girls snapped a three-game losing streak with a victory over a winless Stafford team, 51-20 while the Avon High girls rolled to their ninth straight win with a dominating 56-31 win over Bolton, which shared the league title with the Falcons a year ago.

In Stafford, Cam Daley had a game-high 18 points for Canton while Andrew Zukowski chipped in with 13 points as the Warriors (4-5) allowed just 14 points in the first half to build a 14-point halftime lead.

In Canton, the girls team didn’t allow a single point in the first quarter of their game with Stafford (0-12) and built a 33-8 lead at halftime. Maggie Treacy led the way with 10 points including a pair of three-point goals. Gabby Rose added seven points.

In Avon, the Falcons (11-2, 10-0 NCCC) hosted Bolton and dominated, giving up just 10 points in the first half and building a 22-point lead at halftime. Olivia Welter led the Falcons with 15 points while Abby Laszewski scored 14 and pulled down 11 rebounds. Anna Schrecengost chipped in with 12 points and seven assists. Both teams went 15-1 and shared the NCCC championship a year ago.
