CHARLOTTE , N.C., March 16 – It’s been a great weekend in the pool for Avon’s Madison Kennedy at the Southern Zone Senior Swimming Championships at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center.
Kennedy won the 50-yard freestyle, the 100-yard freestyle and took second in the 100-yard backstroke at the meet. She also set a sectional record in the 50 yard freestyle.
On Saturday, Kennedy set a new record as she won the 50 free in 22.05 seconds, snapping the old sectional record set by Maritza Correia (22.31) in 2006. Kennedy beat SwimMac teammate Catherine Meilli, who finished second in 22.56 seconds and SwimMAC’s Kelsi Hall, who was third in 22.58 seconds.
Kennedy also swam in the 100 backstroke and finished second in 53.60 seconds. The race was won by SwimMAC teammate Kathleen Baker, who broke the sectional record with her winning time of 51.51 seconds. Baker broke the record she set earlier in the day in qualifying (52.30).
On Sunday, Kennedy swam in the 100-yard freestyle, where she was seeded 11th in the pre-meet rankings. She had the fastest in the preliminaries (49.23) and won the race in 48.23 seconds, about 0.54 of a second ahead of Meili.
The meet is part of the Speedo Champions series, a group of 20 regional swimming meets around the nation that run through July.
