CANTON, March 4 – With a strong defensive effort in the first quarter and one of their best offensive performances of the season, the Canton High girls basketball team won their opening contest in the CIAC Class S tournament with a 67-42 win over visiting Terryville.

No. 10 seed Canton (15-7) drained seven 3-point shots and had 19 assists. Erin Detorie led the way with 15 points for the Warriors on five 3-point shots while Gabby Rose added 14 points. Jacquie Grabowski scored 13 points while Maggie Treacy had five steals, five assists and five points.

Canton took command from the outset and led by 12 points after one quarter, 19-5. Olivia Pilarski and Bailey Doran had 10 points each to lead No. 22 Terryville.

The Warriors travel to No. 7 East Windsor (15-6) for a second round contest on Friday night at 7 p.m. Canton dropped a 48-43 decision to East Windsor in January as Canton’s furious fourth quarter rally fell short.

Avon 61, Bethel 31
AVON, March 4 – The Avon High girls basketball team gave up just eight points in the second and third quarter as the Falcons dominated in a 61-31 win over No. 28 Bethel in the first round of the Class L girls basketball tournament.

Sophomore Abby Laszewski was outstanding, scoring 23 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. Olivia Welter added 10 points for the Falcons (22-2) while guard Anna Schrecengost scored seven points.

The challenge gets stronger on Friday in the second round when the Falcons host No. 12 RHAM (16-6) at 7 p.m. The Sachems are led by senior guard Sarah Veilleux, who has scored over 2,000 points in her high school career. She averaged 34 points and 9.8 rebounds a game during the regular season.
