AVON, April 22 – Junior Maddi McHugh won two individual events and ran on a winning relay team as the Avon High girls track and field team improved to 6-0 with victories over Ellington and Coventry on Tuesday afternoon. The Falcons won 14 of 17 events to capture their 24th consecutive dual meet dating back to April 2012.
On the boys side, Ellington’s Patrick Caruthers and Dan Gagnon each won two events as the Purple Knights remained unbeaten (6-0) with wins over Avon and Coventry. Jake Sartain won three events for the Falcons, who are now 4-2 on the season.
Chamiyah Rowland (100), Tara Shayler (200), Molly Hamel (3,200), Carly Regalado (110 hurdles), Maeve Reiss (300 hurdles), Jade Yen (shot), Erin Sherman (javelin), Kaleigh Sherman (high jump) and Kaely Quijano (pole vault) each won individual events.
Avon also won all three relays, capturing the 4×800 (Hannah Fusaro, Ryley Higgins, Sara Kate Mascoli, Hamel), 4×100 (Rowland, Karina Bucci, Shayler, Emma Schweitzer) and 4×400 (Regalado, Reiss, Bucci, McHugh). McHugh came from behind on the final leg of the race to earn the victory.
Sartain won the long jump and triple jump while tying teammate Justin Reichler in the high jump. Jeff Kirk won twice, winning in the javelin and tying for first place in the shot with Ellington’s Dan Gagnon. Avon’s Patrick Howard won the pole vault with a season-best leap of 11 feet. Reichler was second in the triple jump and third in the long jump.
Avon also won the 4×100 relay relay (David Lim, Sartain, Scott Frederick, Evan Edgar).
