AVON – It was the final home meet for the seniors on the Avon High track and field team on Tuesday afternoon. An undermanned Enfield team didn’t provide much competition as the Falcons swept to easy victories.
But it was one last opportunity for the senior members of the team to compete on their home track. Seniors Jake Sartain and Justin Reichler won two events each while Scott Frederick and Evan Edgar each won an individual event and ran on two winning relays as the Avon boys dominated Enfield, 114-31.
The Avon High girls extended their school record win streak to 29 consecutive dual meets with a 148-10 victory over the Raiders. Avon (11-0) was led by senior Erin Sherman, who swept the discus, shot put and javelin.
The Falcons also received individual victories from Sara Stokesbury (800 meters), Caroline Rendeiro (high jump) and Maeve Reiss (triple jump).
It’s been a strong four years for this senior class. The girls team has gone 49-3 over that span with one NCCC championship and a fifth place finish in Class MM last year. The boys team is 38-13 over the last four years and has clinched a winning season for the ninth straight year.
Along with strong performances against Enfield from Sartain, Reichler, Frederick and Edgar, senior Adam Helmy was second in the 800 meters, Tim O’Brien was third in the discus and Nick Zacchio was third in the shot. Classmate Michael Karski ran on the winning 4×800 relay team.
Other seniors who ran well against Enfield for the girls include Rachael Rosow, who ran on the winning 4×800 relay team, Sarah Kate Mascoli, who was second in the 800 meters, Marissa Gaudianna, who was second in the discus and Emily Gackstaffer, who was third in the high jump.
Chamiyah Rowland (100), Karina Bucci (200, long jump), Maddi McHugh (400), Christina Martin (1600), Molly Hamel (3,200), Kaely Quijano (pole vault) and Carly Regalado (100 hurdles, 300 hurdles) also won individual events for the Avon girls. Quijano tied her own school record with a leap of 10 feet.
