Play in the Avon Soccer Club’s 25th annual Memorial Day Tournament is Saturday and Sunday at Fisher Meadows.
AVON, May 22 – Over 1,000 athletes on dozens of boys and girls soccer teams from Connecticut and around New England are expected to participate this weekend in the Avon Soccer Club’s 25th annual Avon Memorial Day soccer tournament.
Competition begins Saturday morning, May 24, at 8 a.m. at Fisher Meadows Recreation Area in Avon and nearby Avon Old Farms and runs through 6 p.m. On Sunday, play begins at 8 a.m. and runs through 5 p.m.
Admission is free and the public is invited to attend.
Sportsmanship could help determine champions in each division. Players, coaches and parents are graded in every match for sportsmanship by the game referees.
The team with the highest score will receive a sportsmanship award. If two teams are tied at the end of the tournament, the sportsmanship score is used as a tiebreaker to determine the tournament champion.
Competition will be held among boys ages 9 to 16 and among girls ages 9 to 14. The majority of the tournament consists of travel teams but there is a division of girls premier-level teams competing.
Teams from Avon, Simsbury, Burlington, Monroe, Waterbury, South Windsor, Middletown and Wethersfield are in the tournament.
