Canton girls lax earns first-ever tourney bid; NCCC tourney pairings finalized

The Avon High girls lacrosse team recently clinched its third straight league title. The Falcons and Sammi Maniatty (11) play in the NCCC Tournament final Thursday in Suffield.

The Canton High girls lacrosse team won three of its final five games including a 9-4 decision over Suffield last week to earn its first-ever CIAC tournament berth. Leading scorer Kaelyn Oliver had five goals in Canton’s 9-4 win over Suffield. 

The Warriors finished the regular season with a 7-9 record, good enough to clear the 40 percent qualification standard for the state tournament, which begins May 30 and 31. 

Oliver finished the regular season with a team-high 53 goals, including 21 in the final five games. She had five goals in a 15-9 win over St. Bernard and a 11-9 loss to Ellington. The No. 2 scorer on the team is Olivia Sullivan with 30 goals, followed by Emma Charron with 27 goals. 

The Warriors also scored 11 goals against NCCC champion Avon last week in a 14-11 loss. Oliver, Sullivan and Grace Giancola each had three goals for Canton. 

NCCC TOURNAMENT PAIRINGS: The NCCC lacrosse tournaments begin Tuesday at Suffield High. Three teams qualified for the boys and girls tournaments. 

In the girls tournament, Granby (13-3, 8-2 NCCC) faces Somers (10-6, 6-4 NCCC) in a semifinal game Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Suffield High. The winner faces league champion Avon (14-1, 10-0 NCCC) on Thursday at 5 p.m. Avon has won the last two NCCC Tournament titles. 

In the boys tournament, Avon (7-9, 6-4 NCCC) faces Granby (12-3, 9-1 NCCC) in a semifinal game on Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Suffield High. The winner faces Somers (15-1, 9-1 NCCC) on Thursday at 7 p.m. Avon has won the last two NCCC Tournaments. Somers last won this event in 2011 and Granby’s last NCCC Tournament title came in 2010. 

TESTED: The Avon High girls lacrosse team clinchéd its third straight NCCC championship with a 14-11 win over Canton last week. Britt Douglas had eight goals in the win while Hannah Davey added three. It was Avon’s 19th straight NCCC victory and its 31th win in their last 32 league games dating back to 2011. 

Two days afterward, the Falcons beat Hand, 14-11 at the Surf Club in Madison behind five goals each from Davey and Sammy Maniatti. Hand is now 12-4. 

Avon (14-1) will test themselves Tuesday when they face Simsbury (12-1) on the road Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. The only loss this season for the Trojans came against undefeated Glastonbury (15-0). It was Glastonbury that handed Avon its only loss of the year on May 2, 15-11.
