EAST WINDSOR – With a balanced team effort, the Avon High girls track and field team beat East Windsor, 85-42 and Bolton, 142-7 to post its second consecutive undefeated season. The Falcons won 13 of 15 events to finish undefeated in back-to-back seasons for the first time in team history.
Avon (13-0, 13-0 NCCC) has won 31 straight dual meets since late in the 2010 campaign. The Falcons go into next week’s NCCC championship meet at Ellington in good shape to win a second straight league title. Teams earn one point for each dual meet victory and one point for each team they beat at the league championship meet.
“We’ve instituted a winning attitude for track and field,” Avon High coach Al Dadario said referring to his five-person coaching staff. “It’s real fulfilling with the way all of the running programs (including cross country and indoor track) have come along. It’s a testament to the kids we have and the work they put in.
“As a program, we want to excel and raise the ball each year,” Dadario said.
A strong core of runners from the cross country program is the heart of the team but the Falcons are receiving contributions all over the track. “We’re not just a distance program anymore,” he said. “It’s everything.”
Carly Regalado swept the 100 and 300 hurdles Tuesday while Erin Sherman won the javelin, took second in the shot and discus and third in the long jump. Kaely Quijano easily won the pole vault with a leap of 9-feet, 6 inches, Jade Yen won the shot and Caroline Rendeiro was tied for second in the high jump.
Avon excelled on the track, too. The Falcons won the 4×800 and the 4×400 relays. They picked up victories from Chamiyah Rowland (100), Maddi McHugh (400), Sarah Katherine Mascoli (800), Molly Hamel (1,600) and Kristen Goldie (3,200).
Dadario is assisted by coaches Matt Mooney, Dave Zlatin, Tim Filon, Courtney Fusco and Rebecca Kessler.
The Avon High boys track team finished the dual meet season with a 9-4 record after dropping a close meet to East Windsor, 76-74 and beating Bolton, 117-32.
Justin Reichler had an outstanding afternoon, winning three events and taking second in a fourth. Reichler won the long jump, shot and high jump while taking second in the triple jump. He had a season-best leap of 6-0 in the high jump and beat teammate Jake Sartain by 1½ inch in the long jump.
Sartain won the triple jump and was second in the high jump and long jump.Andrew Suter swept the 1,600 and 3,200 meter races. Other individual winners for the Falcons included Evan Edgar (400) and Eric Kirk (javelin). Patrick Howard leaped 11 feet in the pole vault but finished second.
Avon’s Evan Edgar, Eric Kirk, Adam Helmy, Greg Oberhausen won the 4×800 relay.
NOTE: The Avon High boys team has won at least nine dual meets in the last seven seasons. … Previous undefeated seasons for the Avon High girls program came last year (13-0), 1989 (14-0), 1983 (14-0) and 1980 (17-0).
