Canton boys finish season undefeated for fourth straight year

Track logo DSC_1740ELLINGTON, May 20 – Senior Keith Wilson and Colin Martin each won three individual events while Devon Glasson and Cam Daley each won two as the Canton High boys track team completed a fourth consecutive undefeated regular season Tuesday with victories over Ellington and Granby.

With a 92-58 win over Ellington and a 129-21 decision over Granby, Canton improves to 13-0 and extends their school-record winning streak to 51 consecutive dual meets since the 2010 campaign.

Canton is in good position to capture its third straight NCCC championship next Tuesday at the NCCC Tournament at Ellington High. Teams earn one point for every team they beat in the dual meet portion of the season and one point for each team they beat at the league tournament.

The Warriors have won the NCCC Tournament four years in a row.

Wilson swept the 200, 400 and 110 hurdles while participating in Canton’s winning 4×400 relay. Martin won the 100 meters, long jump and triple jump while running on Canton’s winning 4×100 relay. Daley won the 300 hurdles and javelin while running on the 4×400 relay.

Dean Yost (800) and James Yost (1,600) also won individual events for Canton, which will host the Last Chance Qualifier meet on Saturday at the high school.

On the girls side, Canton split with Ellington and Granby in a record-setting performance. The Warriors beat Ellington, 99-50 while falling to Granby, 85-65. Canton finished fourth in the regular season with its best-record ever at 9-4. The Warriors finished with a winning record for just the second time in team history.

Alex Martin won the 400 meters and 110 hurdles while Emily Mitchell (long jump), Emily Chouinard (pole vault) and Lucy Tanner (300 hurdles) won individual events. Canton’s Emily Briggs, Eliza Chekas, Emily Jarka and Abby Briggs won the 4×800 relay, setting a new school record with a time of 11:05.28.

Canton athletes set three new individual school records and matched a fourth. Martin broke Sarah Allen’s record in the 100 hurdles, turning in a 17.51 time, breaking the old mark of 18.44 seconds. In the 300 hurdles, Tanner’s time of 49.70 seconds snapped the record set by Martin in 2012 of 50.62 seconds.

Mitchell’s leap of 15-6 feet broke the long jump record set by Jamie Haberern of 15-0 1/2 in 2011. And Chouinard’s leap of seven feet in the pole vault tied the mark set by Lindsay Milligan earlier this year.

Granby (11-2) finished third in the league in the dual meet portion of the schedule, losing only to Avon and Suffield. The Bears were led by Emily Uhl, who swept the shot put, discus and javelin. Brianna Hoyt captured the 100 and 200 meter races while Cynthia Jones (1,600) and Shannon Ryan (high jump) won individual events.
