CANTON, May 10 – The Canton High girls lacrosse team tied a school record on Saturday with their fourth win of the season on the turf at the high school with a 13-2 win over Rocky Hill.

The Warriors set a new record for fewest goals allowed in a single game, breaking the record of three that they allowed in a 7-3 win over Lewis Mills in 2011. Canton didn’t give up a goal in the second half and Warrior goalie Amanda Gottlieb made nine saves.

Canton junior Olivia Sullivan had a career-high six goals in the victory while sophomore Kaelyn Oliver had four goals and two assists. Sophomore Emma Charron had two goals and an assist while sophomore Devon Daubert added a goal.

With the win, Canton keeps its CIAC Class S tournament hopes alive. The Warriors (4-6, 1-5 NCCC) need to win three of their final five games to grab a tournament berth.

“I’m so pleased on how well they are playing,” second-year coach Dee Stephan said. “They’re working well together as a team. It’s a good mix of kids with experience and players without experience. They really support each other.”

It’s a young team, too. There are just two seniors (defender Deirdre Kronschnabel, goalie Alexis Griswold) and three juniors in the program. The remaining 15 players in the program are freshmen and sophomores.

Oliver is the team’s leading scorer with 26 goals and five assists in 10 games. Freshman Grace Giancola has scored 17 goals with five assists, including a six-goal effort in a win over Windsor, while Sullivan has scored 16 goals. Charron has scored 15 goals with five assists.

Canton has two home games remaining against North Branford on Tuesday and Ellington on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. The following week, Canton finishes out the regular season with games on the road at St. Bernard (May 19), Avon (May 21) and at Suffield (May 22) for a night game beginning at 6 p.m.

Two Canton players selected to play in national tournament

CANTON — Two Canton players have been selected to play on a Lower New England All-Star team at the upcoming U.S. Lacrosse National Tournament in Maryland on Memorial Day weekend.

Sophomore goalie Amanda Gottlieb was selected to play on Lower New England team 1 while sophomore Devon Daubert was selected to participate on Lower New England’s team 5. Nearly 60 teams from across the country will be participating in the event, which is for athletes in grades 9-11. The Lower New England team consists of players from Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

The U.S. Lacrosse Women’s Division national tournament began in 1933 as a tournament to showcase the best post-collegiate and club women’s lacrosse players. Since that time, it has grown into one of the largest women’s lacrosse events in the nation.

Freshman Grace Giancola and sophomore Kaelyn Oliver were also selected to tryout for the Lower New England team but were not chosen to play in the national tournament.
