Best ever finish as Avon takes fourth at CIAC girls golf championships

Golf ballORANGE – It was an impressive day for the Avon High girls golf team at the CIAC girls golf championship tournament at the Orange Hills Country Club Tuesday. Four of Avon’s five players broke 100 as the Falcons had their best-ever performance at the state championship event.

Avon finished fourth led by senior Marissa Grillo, who tied for fourth with a six-over-par 80. Melissa Horovitz shot a 94 while Leezy Lavrova had a 95. Anna Grant shot 99 and Christine Bae shot a 100 for 18 holes.

Avon shot a school-record 368 to finish fourth behind Greenwich (335), Berlin (346) and Staples-Westport (355). The Falcons finished ahead of Farmington (378) and Simsbury (383), who were fifth and seventh, respectively.

“I am really happy for the girls,” Avon’s first-year coach Eric Hoffman said. “All year, it has been a team effort and today wasn’t any different. Marissa Grillo was once again our anchor. She did a great job today. Leezy, Anna, Melissa and Christine all played well under pressure today.”

Grillo made par on 12 of 18 holes including four of her final four holes. By tying for fourth place, Grillo, who was medalist 13 times this spring, qualified to play in the New England tournament for the second straight year. The New England tournament will be Monday, June 23 at Bretwood Golf Course in Keene, N.H.

It was Avon’s ninth straight year in the CIAC tournament. Before Tuesday, Avon’s best finish had been sixth in 2007.

Avon (19-3, 11-1 SCGGL) still has one more match left on the schedule. The Falcons will be at the SCGGL league tournament on Friday at Hawks’ Landing in Southington. The tournament was rained out last week. Avon has won the last three league tournaments and Grillo is the two-time defending champion.

Farmington was led by Kate Fagan, who shot an 86. Larkin Meehan (93) and Anne Harris (98) each broke 100 but two other players did not. Simsbury had two players under 100, led by Mikayla Sheary with a 85 and Stephanie Rosenberg with a 90.
