The summer baseball and softball seasons are coming to an end and most local teams have packed away the bats, balls and equipment.
Avon’s Minor Division (age 10-11) baseball team won its sixth District 6 title earlier this month, beating Tri-Town. However, in the state tournament, Avon picked up their first losses of the tournament and was eliminated.
Avon lost to District 3 champion Seymour, 13-3 in its Division II tournament opener. Two nights later, Avon (5-2) was beaten for a second time by Seymour, 11-4. Southington South won the Division II tournament by beating Seymour.
9-10 BASEBALL: Canton (6-3) saw its summer season come to an end by losing to Farmington, 10-6. Farmington won the Division II tournament before falling in the Section I championship game to Fairfield National, 11-0. Canton did rally to beat Farmington, 9-8 in the opening game of the Division II tournament.
MAJOR BASEBALL (age 11-12): District 6 champion Simsbury lost their first two games in the Division II tournament and was eliminated. Farmington beat Simsbury, 7-6 and then Seymour eliminated Simsbury with a 12-3 victory.
JUNIOR SOFTBALL (age 13-14): District 6 champion Simsbury won its opening contest in the Section I tournament with a 10-0 win over Meriden. But Seymour blanked Simsbury, 10-0 and then Fairfield eliminated Simsbury with a 10-3 decision. Seymour went 5-0 in the state tournament, winning the state title with a dominant sweep of Pawcatuck/Mystic/Westerly, 11-0 and 7-3 in the championship series.
9-10 SOFTBALL: District 6 champion Granby (8-3) went 2-2 in the Division II group at the state tournament. Granby beat Bristol twice, 5-1 and 7-2. But they lost twice to Seymour, 1-0 and 7-2.
