Roundup: Canton’s record-tying win streak halted at 7; Avon boys still unbeaten

Soccer graphic CPWINDSOR LOCKS, Oct. 14 – The record will remain at seven. Windsor Locks outlasted the Canton High boys soccer team on Tuesday, 3-2, to snap Canton’s record-tying win streak at seven straight games. The Warriors (8-3, 6-3 NCCC) had won seven games in a row since losing to Avon on September 16. 

Canton previously won seven in a row in 1973 when they won the final seven games of the season to win their first Class S championship. They also won seven straight in 1975 and 1983. 

Canton received goals from Nate Hanson and Riley Hoffman on Tuesday while goalie Josh Frigo made two saves. 

Avon 4, Stafford 0
STAFFORD, Oct. 14 – The Avon High boys soccer remained perfect in the NCCC with a 4-0 win over Stafford on Tuesday. The Falcons (9-0-2, 9-0 NCCC) received three goals from leading scorer Riley Strassner (18 goals) and one from Max Gorack (6 goals). The Falcons are ranked No. 8 in the latest Class LL/L state coaches poll.

Avon 2, Enfield 0
AVON, Oct. 14 – Shelly George scored her season-leading 10th goal of the season in a 2-0 win over Enfield on Tuesday. Karina Bucci added her first of the season as the Falcons improved to 8-1-1 and 8-1 in the league. The game comes after No. 8 Avon’s defense stood tall in a 0-0 overtime tie with No. 4 Glastonbury on Saturday. Avon goalie Natalie Sawicki made 23 saves in the contest. 

VOLLEYBALL
Lewis Mills 3, Canton 2
BURLINGTON, Oct. 13 – The Warriors put up one of their fiercest fights of the season before dropping a 3-2 decision to Lewis Mills on Monday night. Canton won the first two games of the match, 26-24 and 25-13. But Mills (4-8) rallied with a 25-14 victory in game three and a thrilling 26-24 win in game four. Mills earned the win with an 18-16 victory in the decisive fifth game. 

Rachel Falzone had 11 aces for Canton (3-10, 2-9 NCCC) while Emma Plourde had six kills and six aces. Hunted Fabretti had 18 assists, three digs and four aces for the winning Spartans. Amber Tharau had five kills. 

Avon 3, Newington 0
AVON, Oct. 14 – Sammy Maniatty had 13 kills and 18 digs as the Avon girls volleyball team won their sixth straight match with a 3-0 sweep of Newington (25-17, 25-18, 25-22). Abby Laszewski had 10 kills and Brooke Fisher had 33 assists for Avon. Caitlin Cunningham led the way defensively with 13 digs. 

The Falcons haven’t dropped a game during this win streak. The Falcons improve to 10-3 overall and 9-2 in the NCCC. Avon plays Enfield on Wednesday night before a match on Friday at undefeated Granby (13-0, 10-0 NCCC) against the top team in the league.
