Canton field hockey gets first Class S win since 2007; Avon booters dominate Masuk

DEEP RIVER, Nov. 3 – Grace Giancola scored her team-leading 10th goal of the season and goalie Natalie Nardello had her sixth shutout of the season as the No. 17 Canton field hockey team blanked No. 16 Valley Regional, 2-0 on Monday in the first round of the Class S tournament. 

It’s the first win for Canton (7-8-0-1) in the state tournament since 2007. Peyton Jackson also scored for the Warriors. Valley finishes its season at 7-9-1.

Canton’s next opponent is much closer to home. The Warriors face top seeded Lewis Mills (15-0), the Berkshire League champion, on Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Burlington.

Avon 5, Masuk 2
AVON – The Falcons rebounded for dropping its first game of the season last Wednesday to Suffield with a dominating 5-2 decision over No. 22 Masuk-Monroe. No. 11 Avon (13-1-3) advances to the second round in the Class L tournament and will host No. 27 Stratford (6-5-6).

The Red Devils upset No. 6 Lyman Hall-Wallingford, 1-0 in overtime on a head ball from Christian Camargo with 3:44 left in OT.
