CANTON, Dec. 17 – The Canton High girls basketball team leapt out to a quick 20-2 advantage and never looked back in a 58-29 decision over Somers Wednesday night.
Junior Maggie Treacy led the way for Canton (2-0, 2-0 NCCC) with a game-high 13 points, five steals and five rebounds. Sophomore Emily Briggs had 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

Somers 63, Canton 54
SOMERS, Dec. 17 – Somers’ Kyle Trusch scored 19 of his game-high 21 points in the second half to lead Somers to a 63-54 season opening victory over Canton Wednesday. Trusch scored eight points in the third quarter and 11 in the fourth quarter to spark Somers.
The Warriors (0-1, 0-1 NCCC) held a 21-20 lead at halftime but the Spartans pulled away in the third quarter, taking an eight-point lead after three quarters. Thanks to Trusch, they built upon that lead in the fourth quarter.
Canton was led by Cameron Lange with 18 points and Cam Daley with 13 points. Ethan Burke scored eight for the Warriors while Jake Schatevel added seven.
The Warriors host their home opener on Friday night when they tangle with Stafford beginning at 7 p.m.
NOTES: Canton slips to 44-49 on opening night. Somers improves to 2-0 on opening night against Canton. They also won in the 1988-89 season opener with a 60-54 decision.
