Canton wins 2nd straight game; Avon falls to Ellington; Generals prevail in OT

CP basketball graphicCANTON, Dec. 23 – Junior Cameron Lange scored 17 points while junior Jake Schaetzel added 14 to lead the Canton High boys basketball team to their second straight win with a 59-51 decision over Windsor Locks on Tuesday night. The visiting Raiders led by three at halftime, 21-18, but Canton turned things around in the third quarter with defense and used a 21-9 run to seize control of the contest. 

The Warriors host East Lyme on Saturday at 5 p.m. in the first game of a doubleheader at the high school. The Canton girls host Granby at 7 p.m.

Ellington 61, Avon 59
ELLINGTON, Dec. 23 – Jack Connelly scored a game-high 29 points as Ellington handed Avon its first loss of the season in a 61-59 victory on Tuesday night. The Purple Knights erased a four-point halftime lead with a strong third quarter effort. Seven 3-point goals by the Knights didn’t hurt either. Nate Laszewski led Avon with 26 points, including four 3-point goals. Alex Zacchio and Zach Stirling added 14 points each. 

Avon hits the court again on Monday when they host valley rival Farmington at 7 p.m.

HOCKEY
Farmington Valley 1, Hall/Southington 0, OT
AVON, Dec. 23 – Andrew Arena scored in overtime to lift the Farmington Valley co-op hockey team (Farmington/Avon/Windsor) to a thrilling 1-0 win over the Hall/Southington co-op team before a rowdy crowd Tuesday night at Avon Old Farms. Arena scored his first career goal off a rebound of a shot from Michael Arciero with 4:47 remaining in OT. 

Connor Adams made 21 saves in net for the Generals (2-1) to earn the victory. Farmington Valley peppered Hall/Southington goalie Eric Bender with 44 shots and he stopped 43.
