Hamel leads Avon girls to 2nd place finish in NCCC; Canton boys also take 2nd

Avon High senior Molly Hamel has won four dual meets this fall.

Avon High senior Molly Hamel won two NCCC titles at Monday’s league championship meet.

NEW HAVEN, Jan. 19 – A year ago, the Avon High girls indoor track team won all four relay events on the way to their second straight NCCC championship. This winter, the Falcons aren’t as deep. Avon didn’t win a single relay as Stafford beat the Falcons by nine points, 93-84 to win the NCCC championship Monday at the Floyd Little Athletic Center at Hillhouse High.

On the boys side, Ellington won three relays and had individual champions in four events to outlast Canton, 135-90 to win its fourth straight NCCC indoor track championship. The Avon boys were eighth in their final NCCC championship appearance.

For the Avon girls, senior Molly Hamel won two individual titles in the 1,000 meters and 3,200 meters. Canton’s Ian LaClair won the shot while Lucy Tanner successfully defended her championship in the 55 hurdles to lead the Warrior girls to a ninth place finish.

In the girls race, Stafford had a solid effort across the board to win the NCCC championship. The Bulldogs won the 4×200 relay and had individual winners in four events.

Avon was led by Hamel, who became the first Falcon to win two individual titles at the NCCC indoor championship meet. Her winning time 3:08.15 in the 1,000 meters was a new school record, breaking the mark set a year ago by Maddi McHugh (3:11.11). Hamel won the 1,000 by nearly three seconds. She won the 3,200 by a whopping 53 seconds over teammate Rachael Martin. Avon had the top three finishers in the 3,200 meters with Gabriella Colletti taking third.

Avon’s 4×800 relay team (Hannah Carpino, Christina Martin, Colletti, Kristen Goldie) took second along with Chimaya Rowland, who was second in the 55 meters. Colletti (3,200), Rachael Martin (1,600), Jade Yen (shot) and the sprint medley relay team (Rowland, Taylor-Ann Jacobs, Grace Meadow and Hamel) each finished third.

The Avon High boys saw three school records get broken. Andrew Suter took third in the 1,600 meters with a record time of 4:49.31. Greg Oberhausen had a school record time of 1:32.93 on the way to a fourth place finish in the 600 meters, breaking the mark (1:33.61) set by Oberhausen at the NCCC Invitational earlier this month.

Avon’s 4×800 relay team (Brett Holtzman, Collin Pritchard, Oberhausen, Suter) finished third with a school-record performance of 8:59.15, snapping the old mark of 9:17.38 set at the NCCC championship meet in 2013.

The Canton boys finished second for the third consecutive year. They’ve finished in the top two at the league meet in six of the last seven years.

Ian LaClair won the NCCC title in the shot with a throw of 40 feet, two inches. Several Warriors earned silver medals. Riley Hollis took second in the 300 meters and long jump. Dean Yost was second in the 1,000 meters while his brother James Yost was second in the 1,600 meters.

Will Briggs took third in the high jump while Stephen Oliver was fourth in the pole vault with a school record leap of nine feet, six inches.

Canton sophomore Lucy Tanner on the way to setting a new NCCC meet record in the 300 hurdles.

Canton’s Lucy Tanner, in action last spring, won her second straight NCCC indoor title in the 55 hurdles.

Canton’s relays performed well. The 4×800 relay (Noah O’Leary, Ethan Porter, Zach Oliver, James Yost) and 4×400 relay (Bradley Connolly, Dustin Van Kirk, John Solomon, Dean Yost) were each second with the sprint medley relay (Matt Pickett, O’Leary, Ryan Pickett, Dean Yost) finishing third.

For the Canton girls, Lucy Tanner, Abby Briggs and Emily Mitchell each brought home three championship medals for finishing in the top six of their respective events.

Tanner won the 55 hurdles race for the second consecutive season at the NCCC championships with a school record time of 9.28 seconds. It breaks Tanner’s own record of 9.47 seconds set a year ago at this same event.

Tanner was also a member of Canton’s 4×200 relay team (Tanner, Brigggs, Mitchell, Elizabeth Raynor) that finished second in 1:55.76 and the 4×400 relay team (Tanner, Briggs, Mitchell, Raynor) that took fifth. Briggs was third in the 600 meters while Mitchell was sixth in the long jump.

Granby’s girls finished fifth led by Cassandra Miller, who won the 300 meters in 43.86 seconds. The girls 4×400 relay team (Lauren Wutka, Miller, Amanda Rackliff, Shannon Ryan) was third.

On the boys side, Granby was ninth overall. Jeff Turcotte was third in the pole vault with a leap of 9-6. The Bears’ 4×400 relay team (Michael Gantt, Will Groskritz, Nathan Kendrick, Will Rice) finished third.
