HARTFORD, Jan. 5 – Off to their best start since 2009, the Canton High girls basketball team took off from the start in a 70-51 victory over Hartford Classical Magnet on Monday night. The Warriors scored the first 15 points of the contest as they improved to 6-0.
It’s the best start to a season for the Warriors since they won the first seven contests of the 2008-09 campaign six years ago.
“Classical’s pressure got them back into the game to close the (first quarter),” Canton coach Brian Medieros said. “But we closed the half strong.” The Warriors outscored Classical, 17-7 in the second quarter.
“Tonight’s game was a learning experience as we had to deal with constant pressure from start to finish,” he said. “For the most part, we made the right decision but we still have some work to do.”
Maggie Treacy had a career-high 31 points along with nine rebounds and seven steals to lead the Warriors. Emily Briggs added 16 points and pulled down seven rebounds while Gabby Rose had 12 points and a team-high 10 caroms.
Canton returns to the hardwood on Thursday night when they host East Windsor at 7 p.m. The following evening, they travel to Bolton to face the Bulldogs on the road for another 7 p.m. start.
