AVON, May 12 – On Senior Day, the Avon High girls track and field team did what they do best – win. The Falcons extended their dual meet win streak to 43 in a row with a 89-61 win over Granby and a 143-3 decision over Bolton.
Defending NCCC champion Avon is now 12-0 in the league and overall with one more dual meet remaining. The Falcons travel to Coventry next Tuesday to close out the regular season along with Stafford. The NCCC championship meet is Tuesday, May 26 at Granby.
Molly Hamel (1, 600 and 3,200) and Kaely Quijano (pole vault, long jump) each won two events. Quijano tied her own school record of 10 feet in the pole vault.
The Avon High boys (9-3, 9-3) split on the afternoon, beating Bolton, 82-48 but dropping a 86-64 decision to Granby. Avon has now won at least nine dual meets for the past eight consecutive seasons. Andrew Suter won twice for the Falcons in the 1,600 and 3,200 meters.
Warriors remain undefeated
CANTON, May 12 – The Canton High boys track and field team is set for next Tuesday’s showdown at Ellington. The Warriors improved to 12-0 in the league and overall with big victories over SMSA, 132.25-17.75 and Suffield, 126.3-23.7. Ellington is also 12-0.
The winner of the duel between Canton and Ellington will take a step toward winning the league championship. Teams earn one point for every team they beat in the dual meet portion of the schedule and one point for each team they defeat at the league championship meet on Tuesday, May 26 in Granby.
Canton has won the last four NCCC titles and is riding a school-record 63 meet winning streak.
The Canton girls improved to 9-3 with an 88-38 win over SMSA on Tuesday. They dropped a 111-39 meet to Suffield.
