CANTON – Defending league champion Canton has won five of its first seven games in the Connecticut Women’s Softball League and is in first place.

Canton (5-2) hosts Bristol (0-5) in a doubleheader on Sunday at 4 p.m. at Canton High – the final game before a two-week break for the July 4 holiday.

Canton won its fifth straight game on Sunday with a 6-3 win over West Hartford in the opening game of a doubleheader. Katie Donovan threw just 70 pitches and went the distance to pick up the victory.  Bella Colletti was 2-for-3 with a double while Amber Batan had a two-RBI double for Canton.

West Hartford handed Canton its first loss of the season in the nightcap, 19-8 in five innings. On Wednesday. Connecticut Mirage (3-0) out of Suffield handed Canton its second straight loss with a 10-3 decision.

Teams earn three points for a win and one point for a tie. Canton (5-2) currently leads the league with 15 points followed by the CT Tides (3-0, 9), CT Mirage (3-0, 9), Rocky Hill (3-1, 9), West Hartford (2-4, 6) Ellington (1-3, 3), Windsor (1-3, 3) and Bristol (0-5, 0).
