SIMSBURY, June 30 – A day after being shutout for just the second time this summer, the Simsbury American Legion baseball team continued to respond well with a dominating 9-2 Zone 1 victory over Unionville Tuesday night at Memorial Field.
Ryan Gothers had a triple, single and three RBI for Simsbury while Mike Amato added an RBI triple. Jack Lavigne had a two-RBI single for the winners, now 10-3 on the season. Kevin Gurry earned the win on the mound for Simsbury.
Simsbury remains a game ahead of Terryville (9-4) and Wolcott (9-4) and a 1½ game ahead of Avon (8-4), which whipped Winsted on Tuesday, 9-2 for its third win in the last four games.
It’s a busy week for Post 84. Simsbury travels to Wolcott on Wednesday night for a night game at 7:30 p.m. and then hosts Southington on Thursday night at Memorial Field at 5:30 p.m.

Bristol’s Bradley Burney went the distance for Post 1 on Monday in the opener, striking out five and allowing just two hits in a 4-0 victory.
But in the second game, Lavigne, Gothers and Mike Amato each had RBI hits to lead Simsbury to a 4-2 decision over Bristol. Pitcher Pete Myers (Canton/Master’s School) improved to 3-0 on the season by striking out 10, scattering six hits and walking three.
Simsbury hit well against Unionville on Tuesday night. Third baseman Jake King had three hits for Post 84, which led 2-0 after one inning and extended its lead to 5-0 in the fourth inning on Lavigne’s RBI single and Gothers’ two-RBI triple. Lavigne had a two-RBI single in the fifth inning to extend the lead to nine runs.
This is a diverse Farmington Valley squad for Post 84. Gothers is from East Granby, King is from Granby and Lavigne is from Simsbury. There are seven SImsbury players on the team and six are from Canton, including Gurry.
On Monday night, Avon had a season-high 15 hits in a 7-1 win over Southington. Connor McCutcheon and Matt Williamson were each 2-for-3 with two RBI each. Andrew LeDuc was 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Justin Olson pitched six innings to pick up the win on the mound.
On Tuesday night, Post 201 dominated Winsted at Walker Field in a 9-2 decision. Matt Williamson was 2-for-4 with a RBI while Ben Suski was 1-for-4. Connor Harris picked up the win on the mound. Ben Suski and Sean DelGallo also pitched two innings each for Avon.
