
The Avon High girls cross country team, with coach Al Dadario, won the girls varsity II race at the Windham Invitational for the third time in four years.
WILLIMANTIC, Sept. 12 – The Avon High girls cross country team is getting quite comfortable at the 37th annual Haddam Windham Invitational. The Falcons won the girls varsity II race for the second straight year and third time in the last four years Saturday.
With four runners in the top 11, Avon outlasted E.O. Smith-Storrs for the second straight year, 49-53. Key wins came from junior Christina Martin, sophomore Sara Leavens and sophomore Ashley Martin who each one place of an E.O. Smith runner to help secure the win.
The Avon boys finished second in the boys varsity II race, finishing behind E.O. Smith, 56-77.
Sophomore Rachel Martin led Avon in fourth place in the 3.1 mile race with a time of 20:38 followed by Christina Martin in fifth place in 20:38. Christina beat E.O. Smith’s Tessa Morrison by 11 seconds. Avon senior Ryley Higgins was eighth in 21:00 while Leavens was 11th in 21:08, two seconds ahead of E.O. Smith’s Loren Ricci. Rounding out Avon’s top five runners was sophomore Ashley Martin in 22nd place in 21:56, just three seconds ahead of E.O. Smith’s Emily Kaufman.
Berlin’s Jody Dicicco won the girls varsity II race in 19:45 over the 3.1 mile course. Cheshire was third with 73 points while Hand was fourth with 125 points. Avon captured the girls varsity II race in 2014 and 2012. They didn’t run in 2013. Avon’s Risa Lewis (23:09) was third in the girls junior varsity race.
In the boys race, E.O. Smith had four runners in the top 16. Avon was led by senior Andrew Suter, who finished fifth in 17:21. Junior Jonathan Hernandez was seventh in 17:46 while sophomore Jack Stokesbury was 16th in 18:41. Berlin was third in 89 points followed by Thomaston with 97. The Falcons improved on a sixth place finish from a year ago.
