Canton girls improve to 8-1; Avon girls move up to No. 5 in top 10 poll

COVENTRY, Oct. 7 – The Canton High girls cross country team had five of the top six finishers in Wednesday’s dual meet with Coventry and topped the host Patriots, 19-39 to win for the eighth time in dual meets.

Emily Briggs won the race with teammates Cami McCauley taking third, Abby Briggs finishing fourth, Belle Magna in fifth place and Helena Winkler taking sixth place.

Avon moves up to No. 5
Thanks to a dual meet win over Weaver and victories at the Nonnewaug Invitational on Friday and the Hale-Ray Invitational 24 hours later, the Avon High girls cross country team has moved up to No 5 in the latest state coaches poll.

Defending Class MM state champion Avon (4-0, 4-0 CCC Central White) is tied for fifth with Immaculate-Danbury. Tolland, Glastonbury, Ridgefield and Staples are the top four teams, respectively, in the poll.

On Tuesday, the Falcons improved to 4-0 in CCC Central White with an 18-40 win over Northwest Catholic. Avon closes out the dual meet portion of its schedule next week against Farmington (2-3, 2-2 CCC Central White). Teams earn one point for a dual meet win and one point for each divisional opponent they beat at the overall league championship meet on Wednesday, Oct. 21, at Wickham Park in Farmington.

Canton has seven of top 10 finishers to earn win

COVENTRY, Oct. 7 – Canton finished with seven of the top 10 runners in the race to squeak out a close 27-32 in over Coventry Wednesday. Jake Whittingslow led Canton (6-3) with a second place finish and was followed by Ethan Porter (fourth), Zach Oliver (sixth), Matt Sullivan (seventh), Cameron Neeley (eighth), Nicholas Lagonigro (ninth) and Trent Sawtelle.

Avon remains unbeaten
WEST HARTFORD, Oct. 6 – The Avon High boys cross country team remained undefeated in the dual meet portion of its schedule with a 19-36 win over Northwest Catholic on Tuesday. Andrew Suter won his second straight dual meet in 17:21 over the 3.1 mile course.

Avon teammate Jon Hernandez finished second in 17:46 while Jack Stokesbury was third in 18:03. Zach Bortoff (fifth, 18:09) and B. Lancaster (seventh, 18:36) rounded out the top five for the Falcons.
