
The Avon High football team won its fifth game Saturday with a 28-0 win over Northwest Catholic, led by Ian McDonald (8) with 2 TD runs and two TD passes.
WEST HARTFORD, Oct. 31 – Ian McDonald ran for two touchdowns and threw two touchdown passes as the Avon High football team shutout Northwest Catholic Saturday in a CCC Division III contest in West Hartford.
The Falcons (5-2) led 21-0 after one quarter thanks to a 65-yard run from McDonald on the first play from scrimmage and a three-yard touchdown run. McDonald also threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Sean Del Gallo.
McDonald also threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Teddy Allmendinger. McDonald completed 8-of-20 passes for 84 yards. He also ran for a team-high 90 yards on 11 carries. Allmendinger ran for 43 yards on three carries.
Avon’s defense looked sharp, holding the host Lions to minus 1 yard rushing on 29 carries. It was the first game for Northwest Catholic (3-4) using the Lions nickname. The school announced the change on Wednesday to Lions after 50 years of having the nickname of Indians.
It was the first game between the old Nutmeg Conference rivals since 2005 and Avon’s first win over Northwest Catholic since 2003. It is Avon’s first-ever shutout over Northwest Catholic. The Lions are coached by Brett Quinion, who coached the Falcons for 10 years before leaving after the 2012 season.
Avon returns to the field on Saturday when they host Rockville (1-6, 1-1 CCC Div. 3 East) at 2 p.m. If Avon wins, they will clinch the CCC Division III Eastern Division championship.
