
Avon’s Brooke Fisher had 42 assists in Thursday night’s 3-1 win over Torrington in the Class L second round.
TORRINGTON, Nov. 12 – Avon High seniors Abby Laszewski and Brooke Fisher are enjoying the final volleyball games of their scholastic careers. For the second straight match, Laszewski and Fisher made a difference.
Fisher got Laszewski the ball and the 6-foot-3 outside hitter put it away. Laszewski had 26 kills to lead No. 14 Avon to a 3-1 victory over No. 3 Torrington in the second round of the Class L tournament Thursday night at the Connie Donahue gymnasium, 25-12, 15-25, 28-26, 25-19.
Two nights earlier, Laszewski had 19 kills and six digs in Avon’s 3-0 win over Sacred Heart Academy. Fisher had 36 assists and nine digs in that match. Against Torrington, Fisher had 42 assists.
Avon (17-7) advances to Saturday’s Class L quarterfinals at No. 6 Bristol Eastern at 6 p.m. The Lancers (17-3) won CCC South Blue Division before being swept by Glastonbury in the quarterfinals of the CCC Torunament. It is Avon’s first trip to the quarterfinals since 2010.
After the win over the Hearts on Tuesday, Avon coach Curt Burns admitted that Laszewski is a tough player to defend. The Raiders found that out Thursday night.
Not was Laszewski a handful but 6-foot sophomore Maddie Hart had 19 kills. Senior Della Hellwig had 25 digs along with nine each by Laszewski and Hart to help the Falcons control the ball.
For Torrington (18-4), Jayleen Colon had 28 assists and Caitlyn Cornish had 11 kills and five blocks.
