Two fourth quarter TDs lift Lewis Mills past Nonnewaug

football graphicBURLINGTON, Nov. 26 – The Lewis Mills High football team scored twice in the final 8:34 to beat Nonnewaug, 14-7, on Thanksgiving morning and finish the season with a school-record six straight victories.

Nonnewaug (5-5, 2-3 Pequot West) took a 7-0 lead on a one-yard touchdown run by Zach Mauro with 9:45 left in the game. But Lewis Mills responded quickly with Colin Kennedy scoring from 32 yards away less than a minute later to tie the game at 7-7.

Mills (7-3, 3-2 Pequot West) took the lead for good on Mick Cicarelli’s one-yard run with 2:40 remaining in the game. Hunter Cowger’s extra point was good for a 14-7 advantage. Mills iced the contest with Mike Rinkus intercepting a Nonnewaug pass on the Chiefs’ 23-yard line.

Kennedy led the Spartans with 78 yards rushing while Cicarelli ran for 60 yards. Chris Romano led the Lewis Mills’ defense with 10 tackles, including three for losses. For Nonnewaug, Mauro rushed for 100 yards.

After beginning the season 1-3, Mills won six consecutive games and finished with a school-record seven wins. They also finished 11th in the Class M playoff rankings – three spots away from a playoff berth.
