HARTFORD, Dec. 22 – One day after being held to 27 points, the Canton High girls basketball exploded for 72 points Tuesday night in a 72-32 NCCC victory over Hartford’s Sport Medicine Science Academy (SMSA).

Maggie Treacey led the way with 25 points, 14 rebounds and eight steals while Emily Briggs scored 17. Emma Charron had 10 points and nine rebounds. Head coach Brian Medeiros was pleased with the efforts of his team going into the holiday break.

“We had great performances by Emma Charron, Abbe Skinner, Carly Atkinson, Leah Eschenbrenner, and Belle Magna as they accounted for 30 points the most this group has contributed until this point,” he said. Skinner had four points, Eschenbrenner added five while Magna chipped in with a career-high nine points.

“Sarah Bowman did a job inside tonight as she was the most aggressive she’s been in her short time,” Medeiros said. “Freshmen Lauren Puglielli and Morgan Walzak got their first varsity minutes of their Warriors career.”

On Monday night, No. 16 New Fairfield, which won 24 games, the SWC title and went to the Class L semifinals a year ago, held Canton to 27 points in a 47-27 victory in Canton. Briggs had 11 points and Treacy added 10.

“New Fairfield is a very good basketball team and they made us pay for all of our mistakes,” Medeiros said. “They forced us to turn it over 20 times in the first half and combine that with five three-pointers in the first session….equates to a recipe for disaster.”

Canton trailed 34-18 at halftime. Still, Medeiros was pleased to see his team get pushed. “I’m glad we step out of league to get a game like this,” he said. “It will only help us as the year goes on.”

Canton (3-1, 3-0 NCCC) returns to the floor next Monday night as they host the Simsbury Bank Holiday Classic with Hall, Tolland and Granby. The Warriors face Granby on Monday at 7:30 p.m. The championship game is on Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. with the consolation game at 6 p.m. It is the first girls basketball tournament that Canton has ever hosted.

NOTES: Canton’s 40-point win over SMSA on Tuesday night was the largest win since the Warriors beat Enfield by a team-record 45 points in 2010. The 72-point outburst by Canton was the third highest scoring effort in program history. Canton scored a record 81 points in a win over Parish Hill in 1998. They’ve scored 73 points twice and this is the third time that Canton has scored 72 points in a single game.
