Players from the Avon High boys basketball team and their classmates participated in the third annual For the Love of the Game event at the high school recently.
AVON – Snow was expected in a few hours and the decision had been made to close the Avon High facility at 10 a.m. on a cloudy Saturday morning in January. But the decision was reconsidered and delayed an hour to allow the third annual For the Love of the Game basketball game to go on.
For the past three years, members of the Avon High boys basketball team have played a game with classmates from the high school who may be challenged physically or intellectually. It’s been a time to share their love for athletics, basketball and as members of Avon High community.
There are plenty of smiles, cheers and fun. There are pre-game introductions and four quarters of basketball action with some play-by-play commentary from the public address announcer.
When it was over, a father stood on the court with others taking photos of all of the athletes. His son has participated in the game all three years and spoke about his son so looked forward to this opportunity to play on the Avon High hardwood.
He smiled long and hard and watched. For everyone — these were precious memories being created.
Maria Mascoli, president of the Avon High Booster Club, organizes the game each year.
