Plainville tournament honors late coach, teacher who began career at CHS

PLAINVILLE — This past week, Plainville High hosted the 17th annual Rybczyk Memorial basketball tournament with four boys and four girls teams playing basketball. The tournament honors the late David Rybczyk, a former teacher and coach in Plainville, who died in 1999 at the age of 53 due to cancer.

Rybczyk was the boys basketball coach at Plainville from 1994 through 1999, where is also taught history and social studies. He came to the Blue Devils after 11 seasons as an assistant coach of the Central Connecticut State men’s basketball team (1979-91).

After graduating from Central Connecticut State in 1971 where he was a player under Bill Detrick, Rybczyk began his coaching career at Canton. He was a social studies teacher at Canton and was the assistant boys basketball coach under Bill Mudano from 1973-78. The 1977 Warrior team won a Northwest Conference Division II title – Canton’s first championship in basketball since 1963.

    Actually, Dave coached at Canton at least until 1978. And we were Class S State Champions in 1978.
