CANTON, March 4 – Emily Briggs had a game-high 25 points and pulled down 12 rebounds as the No. 3 seeded Canton High girls basketball team advanced to the Class S quarterfinals with a 52-32 win over No. 14 Windham in a second round game Friday night.

The Warriors (19-6) will host No. 22 St. Bernard’s-Uncasville on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at Canton with the winner advancing to the semifinals.

It was a game of runs with the Whippets continually crawling back into contention. Canton led by as many as 13 points but Windham cut the lead to six with under three minutes to go. But Emma Charron scored on a nice drive to the basket that ended a 9-1 Windham surge and ignited a 14-0 Canton run that decided the contest.

“Fortunately, we made enough plays and (defensive) stops to pull this one out,” Canton coach Brian Medeiros said. “It wasn’t the prettiest of games. Windham is well coached and they came with a good game plan tonight.”

Canton's Belle Magna (5) played excellent defense in the fourth quarter of Friday night's win over Windham.

Canton raced out to an early 11-4 lead only to see Windham answer with a 6-1 run to trim Canton’s lead after one quarter to 12-10. The Warriors led by six at halftime. Canton led by as many as 13 in the third quarter but Windham’s Shania Slyman helped spark the Whippets with a game-high 24 points.

“Sarah Bowman did a great job coming off the bench and altering many shots (six blocks) for us on the defensive end,” Medeiros said. “Belle Magna did a great job over the final four minutes of slowing down Slyman.”

Maggie Treacy had 11 points, seven rebounds and five assists while Charron scored nine points.

St. Bernard (11-12) eliminated No. 6 Goodwin Tech-New Britain on Friday, led by their 6-foot-1 center Caitlyn Dittman, who had 26 points and 19 rebounds against Tech. Kara Bassett had nine points and pulled down 13 rebounds for the Saints.
