When the University of Colorado men’s basketball team faces UConn Thursday afternoon in the first round of the NCAA basketball team in Des Moines, Iowa, an Avon High graduate will be on the sideline for the Buffs.

Bill Cartun, a 2000 Avon High graduate, is the director of basketball operations for Colorado. It is his sixth year on the staff. As the director of operations, Cartun is responsible for directing the day-to-day operations of the basketball program, overseeing the budget, and coordinating team travel and video.

Cartun, a two-time All-State basketball player at Avon under legendary coach Jim Taft, came to Colorado after three years with the NBA’s Charlotte Bobcats. Cartun graduated from Bates in 2005 and earned a master’s degree in sports management from UConn in 2007, where he worked with the Huskies and coach Jim Calhoun.

Dom Amore of the Courant caught up with Cartun for a few words on the state of his career.
