AVON – Avon’s Nate Laszewski, a sophomore at Northfield Mount Hermon School in Gill, Mass., had 26 points, 16 rebounds and four assists to earn MVP honors in the New England Prep School Athletic Conference (NEPSAC)’s Class AAA championship game Sunday night.
Laszewski, a 6-foot-8 forward, helped Northfield Mt. Hermon capture the Class AAA New England title with a 95-85 victory over St. Thomas More. The victory lifted Northfield Mt. Hermon (27-7) into the quarterfinals of the 11-team prep school national tournament at Albertus Magnus College in New Haven on Tuesday.
Northfield Mt. Hermon, ranked No. 4 in the nation, raced out to a 17-4 lead with all five starters scoring baskets. But St. Thomas More didn’t wilt and led 42-39 at halftime. Strong defensive stops and solid execution on offense gave Northfield the advantage it needed to win its second New England title in the last five years.
Laszewski was 6-of-12 from three-point range in the championship game.
On Saturday, Northfield Mt. Hermon eliminated South Kent, 86-78 with Laszewski scoring 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting from three-point range. In the tournament, Laszewski averaged 22 points a game, sank 12 3-point shots and pulled down 16 rebounds.
In the regular season, Laszewski averaged 7.1 points and pulled down 3.7 rebounds a game. But he was 51-of-111 from three-point range.
Northfield Mt. Hermon faced Elev8 Sports Institute from Delray Beach, Florida in Tuesday’s quarterfinals. With a win, Northfield would play in the semifinals Wednesday at 1 p.m. with the championship game on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at Albertus Magnus.
