Strassner closes out swimming career with pair of top 10 finishes at State Open

Swimming graphicNEW HAVEN, March 19 – Avon High senior Riley Strassner capped off his scholastic swimming career with a pair of top 10 finishes Saturday at the State Open swimming championships at the Payne Whitney Gynasium at Yale.

Strassner finished sixth in the 100 freestyle with a season-low time of 47.56 seconds and eighth in the 200 freestyle with a season-best time of 1:43.11 to help Avon finish 20th as a team at the State Open. The 20th place finish matches the best-ever team finish for the Falcons, who were also 20th a year ago.

Strassner concludes his high school swimming career with five top 10 finishes at the State Open.

Strassner also was the anchor leg swimmer on Avon’s 400 freestyle relay team that set a new school record with a time of 3:21.58, breaking the old record of 3:21.87 set earlier this week at the Class M championship meet.

Freshman Andre Richard, Maks Jaremko and junior Kyle Emery swam on the team along with Strassner.

Emery also had his best-ever individual finish at the State Open, taking ninth in the 100 backstroke with a time of 54.71 seconds. A year ago, Emery was 11th at the Open in the 100 backstroke.
