Avon girls top NW Catholic for first win of year

Lacrosse stickBLOOMFIELD, April 22 – It’s been a challenging start to the season for the Avon High girls lacrosse team and first-year head coach Kyle Kramek.

Kramek’s young team with just three seniors began the season with a pair of games against southwest Connecticut powerhouses. Joel Barlow beat the Falcons, 16-1 in the first game of the season. In the second game, New Fairfield dominated in a 13-3 victory. Barlow and New Fairfield are each currently 7-1.

Conard (4-1) dominated in a 17-1 victory in game three a week ago in Avon’s Central Connecticut Conference debut.

Avon (1-3, 0-1 CCC North) got back on the winning track Friday with a 21-8 non-division victory over Northwest Catholic. Junior Emma Coran led the Falcons with nine goals while sophomore Chloe Miller scored five goals and sophomore Molly Milligan added three goals.

It was the most goals in a game for the Falcons since scoring 22 in a 22-12 win over Somers in May 2014.

The Falcons will try to extend this winning streak when they host Simsbury (2-3) at 4 p.m. at the high school in a CCC North game. On Wednesday, the Falcons will travel to Ellington (2-2) for a non-league contest against an old NCCC rival beginning at 4 p.m.
