CANTON, May 23 – This wasn’t a season for the record books. The Canton High softball team was small in numbers and they struggled on the field. But they finished with a flourish.
In the final game of the season, the Warriors finished with a dominating 15-4 victory over Hartford Magnet Trinity College Academy on Monday. Canton (3-17) rapped out nine hits, led by senior Anna Shine, who was 2-for-3 with two RBI, a triple and two stolen bases.
Canton stole eight bases and took advantage of 11 walks. Senior Sam Anderson had a RBI single and stole home in the second inning as the Warriors erased an early 2-0 HMTCA lead.
The Warriors scored five times in the second inning to take the lead for good. Shine had a two-RBI triple, while Emma Plourd and Anderson each had RBI singles. Jaela Davidson and Erika Nedderman each had doubles for Canton.
Nedderman earned the win on the mound for the Warriors, striking out nine and allowing just five hits in five innings of work. Reliever Bailey Edgren struck out four in two innings of work.
It was the final game for the six seniors – Shine, Plourd, Anderson, Kelsey Beadle, Megan Hall and Sophia Pelehach. It was the final outing for the Warriors who struggled throughout the season.

Canton (3-17, 1-15 NCCC) finished with the fewest wins in NCCC play since they joined the league in 1985. Prior to this season, the fewest NCCC victories in a season was six in 2006. Three wins may be a new school record mark for fewest wins for the softball program, which had played in the CIAC Class S tournament for 28 of the past 29 years. Since 1985, the fewest wins in a season is six in 2006 when the Warriors were 6-12. Season win/loss records before that are incomplete.
