Defending champion Litchfield shuts out Canton in Tri-State action

CANTON, May 29 – The defending Tri-State League champion Litchfield Cowboys broke open the game with a six-run fourth inning to beat the Canton Crushers, 10-0 at Bowdoin Field on Sunday.

Dustyn Marfyak was 3-for-3 for the visiting Cowboys while Andrew Gauvain was 2-for-5 with a double and a home run. Brendan Roden had a single and a double for Litchfield (1-1) while Ed Pequignot had two singles. Litchfield had 16 hits in the game.

Canton (0-2) had four hits, led by Taylor Riley with an eighth inning double. Jim Spirito, Jake Bryant and Tom Dubois also had singles for the Crushers. Spirito got the start on the mound and gave up eight hits in four innings, striking out three. Riley fanned four in four innings of work.

Litchfield’s starting pitcher Kevin Murray pitched eight innings and struck out nine batters.

The Crushers return to the field on Friday night when they travel to Winsted to face the Whalers at 5:30 p.m. at Walker Field. On Sunday, Canton will host Tri-Town Trojans at 5 p.m. at Bowdoin Field.
