Canton’s Bowman falls in final of NCCC Tournament at No. 1 singles

Tennis graphicSUFFIELD – Canton High junior Joe Bowman won two matches before falling to Ellington’s Micah Fox in straight sets in the championship match at No. 1 singles at the recent NCCC boys tennis tournament at Suffield High.

Fox beat Bowman, 6-1, 6-1 to win the league’s singles championship and help Ellington capture the league tournament with a 17-14 win over Granby. The Purple Knights had finalists in three of the four singles tournaments. Ellington and Granby shared the league championship with 13-1 records this spring.

Liam Connolly (No. 2 singles) and Brendan Shepard (No. 3 singles) each finished fourth in their respective tournament brackets.

At the Class S tournament in West Hartford, Connolly and Shepard both lost their first round matches in straight sets.

Bowman, seeded 11th, won his first two matches beating Harry Jones of Valley Regional, 6-2, 6-0 and William Micheson of Stonington, 6-3, 6-1. Bowman was eliminated by No. 6 seed Oliver Hasson of Northwest Catholic in the third round, 6-2, 6-1.

East Catholic won the title with 19 points, followed by Old Saybrook (16), Old Lyme (13), Nonnewaug (10) and Housatonic (10).
