Late rally give Canton a split in doubleheader with Bombers

Softball graphicCANTON, June 26 – Pitcher Anne Pitkin scattered six hits and struck out eight and Canton rallied with four runs in the eighth inning to beat the Connecticut Bombers from Mansfield Center, 8-4, in the second game of a Connecticut Women’s Softball League doubleheader Sunday at Canton High.

The Bombers (1-5) handed Canton (5-1) their first loss of the season in the early game with a 10-1 victory in five innings.

In the nightcap the game was tied at 2-2 before Canton took the lead in the third inning on a RBI single from Nicole Batan. The Bombers tied up the game in the fourth and it went into extra innings.

In extra innings, a courtesy runner begins at second base – Emily Laliberte. She moved to third base on a single from Christina Cardwell. With one out, Canton took a 5-4 lead on a RBI single from Danielle Leone. Canton made it 6-4 on a RBI single from Nicole Batan. Bella Colletti also had a RBI single in the inning.

Pitkin retired in the side in order to secure the win in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Canton was led by Colletti, who was 3-for-4 with two RBI. Mikelyn Messina, Becky Hoisl, Cardwell, Leone and Amber Batan had two hits each in Canton’s 15-hit attack.

In the opener, Canton managed just five hits and pitcher Chelsea Eckert gave up 11 hits in the five-inning loss. Eckert still managed to strike out 10 in five innings of work.

Canton returns to the field on Sunday, July 10 when they host the Connecticut Mirage from Suffield for a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.
