OXFORD, June 1 – Seymour pitcher John Yish scattered four hits and struck out five batters as top ranked Oxford eliminated the Canton High baseball team with a 6-0 victory in the second round of the Class S tournament Wednesday.
Ryan Enns had three singles for the Warriors (12-10) and Trey Van deBogart also had a single but that was it for the Warrior offense. Starting pitcher Jake Schaetzel (4-5) allowed seven hits and struck out two.
Yish’s two-out RBI single in the first inning gave Oxford (20-4) a 1-0 lead. In the fourth inning, the Wolverines extended the lead to 2-0 on a sacrifice fly. Oxford took a 3-0 lead in the fifth inning with a run scoring on an error.
Oxford, which won the Naugatuck Valley League championship last week, scored three runs in the sixth on a wild pitch and two-out RBI singles from Adam Baktis and Jared Keller. Oxford advances to the quarterfinals.
