Canton, Simsbury Little League advance in D6 baseball tournament with wins

Baseball ImageAVON, July 10 – Five teams are playing in the double-elimination portion of the District 6 Little League Major Division (ages 11-12) baseball tournament. Avon, Simsbury, Canton and Burlington are in the second round of the tournament along with top-seeded Torrington (4-0).

Each team played four games in the round robin portion of the tournament.

The two finalists will play for the District 6 championship on Saturday evening at 5:45 p.m. at the Oak Avenue Field in Torrington with a berth in the Section II state tournament on the line.

Simsbury (4-1) and Canton (4-1) opened this portion of the tournament with victories on Sunday. Simsbury outslugged Avon, 5-2, at Sperry Park in Avon while Canton beat host Burlington, 18-9. Simsbury will face Torrington on Monday night with the winner facing Canton on Tuesday night. The winner of Tuesday night’s contest will go to the D6 championship game.

In the consolation bracket, Avon (3-2) faces Burlington (4-1) on Monday night in Avon with the losing team eliminated.

Avon is the defending District 6 champion. They beat Burlington in the championship game last year, 14-2 in four innings. Simsbury won the title in 2014 while Burlington brought home the championship in 2013. The last time a Torrington captured the District 6 title was in 1994 when the Torrington Americans prevailed. Canton’s last D6 title came in 1988.

In other District 6 tournaments, East Granby/Granby beat Burlington, 13-2 to win the Major Division softball (ages 11-12) title. In the D6 Junior softball tournament (ages 13-14), East Granby/Granby beat Torrington in best-of-three series, 2-1 to win the championship. East Granby/Granby won the decisive game three, 14-4.

In the D6 Minor Division softball tournament (ages 10-11), Torrington beat Canton twice to win the best-of-three final, 23-15 and 22-9.
