CROMWELL — When Avon’s Adelina Cirikovic first started playing golf last year she didn’t know how to swing a golf club. But she is learning. Her hard work and dedication earned her the opportunity to play on the varsity and junior varsity golf teams at Avon High as a freshman.
The 15-year-old was one of three area golfers who received some special experience last week at the Travelers Championship at the TPC-River Highlands. Cirikovic, Avon’s Logan Frame and Canton’s Alex Lederman were some of the 36 young golfers selected to participate in the Eversource PGA Tour Player Experience for Junior Golfers.
Some of the professional golfers provided tips and advice in a golf clinic to the youngsters attending the afternoon session on a sunny afternoon. The young golfers also played a few holes of golf with the professionals on First Tee Connecticut’s four-hole practice course.
“Playing with the pros at the Travelers was awesome,” Cirikovic said. “I want to play golf in college and hopefully play professionally someday. So I think the tips I learned from the elite players will definitely give me an advantage and help my game.”
Cirikovic was selected for the Player Experience based on her personal essay about her golf experience and how she could benefit from the opportunity to participate. That’s also how Frame, 14, and Lederman, 14, were selected to participate.
“These young golfers weren’t only out enjoying a great sport, they were learning and developing lifelong skills through the game of golf from some of the pros,” said Rod Powell, president of Corporate Citizenship at Eversource. “We’re also committed to supporting our neighbors and the health and well-being of the young people in our communities. The Player Experience does just that and we’re proud to sponsor such a unique event.”
It’s the third year that Eversource has partnered with the Travelers Championship, First Tee of Connecticut and the Connecticut Section PGA Junior Golf Association to host the Player Experience for Junior Golfers.
Golfers ranged in age from 8 to 16.
