AVON – The Avon High girls volleyball team will host Bristol Eastern in the first round of the 2016 Central Connecticut Conference volleyball tournament Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Avon High.
The Falcons, seeded eighth in the 16-team tournament with a 12-4 record, face an Eastern team that is also 12-4. If Avon wins, they will likely face No. 1 Farmington, the top ranked team in the latest state coaches poll, on Wednesday in the tournament quarterfinals.
Farmington (18-0, 16-0 CCC) faces No. 16 Middletown (9-9, 8-8 CCC) in the first round on Tuesday.
Avon will be hosting the tournament semifinals on Friday at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. and the CCC Tournament championship game on Saturday at 6 p.m. Platt High is the defending tournament champion, having beat RHAM in the finals a year ago, 3-1 (25-21, 28-26, 20-25, 26-24).
RHAM beat Avon, 3-2 in the CCC quarterfinals a year ago. Platt handed Farmington its only loss of the year in the quarterfinals last November with a 3-2 victory (26-24, 26-24, 19-25, 15-25, 15-11). Farmington went on to win the Class L championship after falling in the CCC Tournament.
This season, Avon (15-5, 12-4) beat Eastern, 3-1 (25-19, 25-22, 20-25, 25-20) in a hard-fought contest. Juniors Maddie Hart and Sofia Berrio led the Falcons with 236 and 108 kills, respectively. Hart also has a team-leading 67 aces. Setter Audrey Worth has a team-leading 529 assists while senior Erin Sutter leads the squad with 51 blocks. Senior Rachael Carlson has a team-leading 206 digs.
Eastern (13-5, 12-4) is led by Mikayla Martin with 253 kills and Aliana Rivoria with 110 kills and a team-leading 249 assists.
